How to Take Apart Leaf Springs

A leaf spring is a series of arced steel flat pieces that are bolted together and mounted to the rear suspension of a truck, trailer or similar vehicle to align the axle as well as provide load control. These components are popular with manufacturers because of the extreme weight they can hold and low cost. If you want to raise or lower your vehicle, one method is to take apart the leaf spring pack and remove or add a leaf. This can be done in just a few minutes.

    • 1

Place the leaf spring pack on its side on a solid work surface or a concrete pad. Remove one of the clamps holding the leaf spring pack together with a 24-inch pry bar to spread the clamp apart.

    • 2

Pull the clamp off of the leaf spring pack with a pair of locking pliers. Repeat this on the other side of the leaf spring pack until all of the leaves can move independently.

    • 3

Remove the center bolt on the leaf spring pack with an open-end wrench and the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. If the center bolt does not have a head on one end, hold the bolt steady with the locking pliers.
